Deja vu by Katerina Palios

Deja vu

I have always been a keen angler from an early age, passed down by my dad who introduced me into the sport by starting down the canal catching the usual suspects on my whip and 2lb line.

It was all fun catching them and not knowing what could take your bait at that age.

The day that stands out for me was when something big hit it and tore off almost taking my whip with it! There was no way my light tackle could hold up a fight from a bigger fish, Rig broken I turned to my dad in shock he looked at me with a slight smile and said, “that was a big fish!” those 5 words rang in my head for days, thinking about this big fish, falling to sleep with images of my float diving after every fishing trip, it was clear I’d caught “the bug”.

My dad patiently taught me how to tie rigs, I soon adapted and eventually he went out and brought me my first pole and started taking me to day ticket lakes, where I also fished a few matches.

Now at the age of 26 I only have time for the bigger, more illusive fish. This started on a fishing holiday for 3 days straight I caught small carp between 3-12lb , I had to find a lake closer to home, I stumbled across Barlow fisheries Sheffield I took a few trips down and I was into my 4th short session, I’d set up my rods and sat back to watch the water. I’d deliberately set up on that peg as I had a good view of where I knew the carp took of the surface, so with a gut instinct took a walk up and threw a handful of bread into the windward margin, then went and sat back on my peg, soon enough the carp where munching on my free offerings I waited a few minutes took a rod and free lined a piece of bread crust letting it drift into the margin, I watched as a carp out of nowhere sunk the bread I struck into it with that solid feeling my heart beating and clutch screaming I had my PB on the end

After the longest 10 minutes of my life she was safely in the net 21lb 2 oz a massive step from my previous 12lb.

after I slipped her back I turned round with a huge grin on my face and said to my partner “that was a big fish!”.

These moments will be with me forever, and for me that’s what it’s all about.

Big thanks to Katerina Palios for writing this

  1. That pretty much sums up my start too except my dad had never fished. He managed to get enough advice and set me up with everything I needed. He took me and my brother fishing most Sundays while mum and Dad had their picnic .. I was soon hooked and since the age of about 6 years old, have fished every minute I can… Great write up
